Running Winlpd.
1. Run Winlpd from the Start Menu in Windows 95 or Windows NT.
2. Make sure you have a Windows printer installed for the local or
network printer.
3. Double click the "Add Printer" in the Winlpd window to
start the printer setup wizard.
4. Select the printer from the list and go to the next screen.
5. Type in the name of the LPD printer. This has to be same as the
name specified on the remote host. Usually this is specified by the
:rp=printername in the /etc/printcap file. If it is not specified
the host uses "lp" as the LPD name.
6. Test out printing from the Unix now.
Important
Tips
1. Make
sure you have a TCP/IP stack installed on your Windows95/98 or
Windows NT machine. See if you can ping this machine from other
machines.
2. Before
sharing printers using Winlpd make sure you have installed a Windows
printer on your machine. This can be done by going to the Printers
folder and selecting the "Add Printer". You can then go to
Winlpd and share the same printer using LPD protocol.
3. Make
sure that you have enough disk space on the drive your Windows95/98
or Windows NT is installed. Winlpd uses the same drive to spool
print requests arriving from other hosts before it can spool it to
the Windows spooler.
4. The
remote printername is specified in the /etc/printcap file on the
Unix machine for the printer entry. It is specified using the :rp=printername
attribute. If this is not specified in the /etc/printcap file, Unix
lpr uses "lp" as the printername.
5. The
default option in Winlpd is to map LF characters to CR LF pair. This
helps in printing Unix text files on PC printers correctly. If you
print binary files, i.e., files which have printer control codes,
you would need to turn this option off.
